Korea finds enzymes that inhibit the growth of cancer cells

Korean researchers announced that it has discovered an enzyme that can inhibit the growth of various cancer cells, including cancerous and hematological cancer cells, and may help explore new therapies for cancer. The team led by An Chengguan, a professor of microbiology engineering at Korea’s Jianguo University, said that a ligase called “Magnolia E3” can invade serine protein kinases, which are key “components” of various cancer cell growth. "We have found that magnolia enzymes can invade the mitochondria of serine protein kinase cells, thereby breaking down serine protein kinases,"

Yonhap quoted the conclusion of the research team on March 18th. Mitochondria are the power plants of cells that control cell division, growth, and death. According to Yonhap, the scientific community discovered a direct link between serine protein kinases and cancer cell growth in the 1990s, but there has been no particularly effective method for inhibiting active serine protein kinases. In traditional chemotherapy, protein kinases show considerable tolerance, which is also the main reason for the weakness of chemotherapy in the face of cancer.

The research team said that Magnolia E3 ligase can control the properties of serine protein kinases and open a new channel for cancer treatment. With this principle, "total therapy" for cancer treatment can be found not only for solid tumors such as lung cancer, breast cancer, and uterine cancer, but also for hematological cancers such as leukemia, myeloma, and lymphoma. The project of the Konkuk University Research Team was funded by the Korea Ministry of Science, Education and Technology, and the academic paper was published in the latest issue of Cell Research.
